Picking a paint color for your home or various colors for multiple rooms is hard enough. But homeowners also need to consider a paint finish, and with six to choose from it is important to understand your options. If you can choose from matte, eggshell or satin, read the tips below to select the perfect paint
Matte Finish
Matte paint finish is a common type of interior paint that has a level finish. According to Phoenix painters, paint that has a matte finish is perfect for walls that homeowners may want to cover small wall bumps, cracks or other imperfections. Because matte finish paint does not reflect any light, it will conceal small wall issues. Be gentle with this when painting and keep extra on hand for small scratches or blemishes. This is often used on ceilings and low traffic parts of the house.
Flat Enamel
Flat enamel is very similar to a matte finish. Like a matte finish, flat enamel also does not reflect light, portrays an even, smooth finish and can help to hide cracks or wall imperfections. It is also more durable than a matte finish and is stronger through the cleaning process. This difference makes this paint finish a good choice for hallways.
Eggshell Finish
Eggs have a low sheen that shines off of the shell, this light reflection is similar in the eggshell finish. With only a slight hint of shine or gloss, the eggshell finish is recommended for walls and holds up better than matte or flat enamels. As a common rule, the more gloss or sheen to paint, the better the paint will sustain under cleaning or scrubbing. Phoenix painters recommend using an eggshell finish in guest bathrooms or powder rooms.
Satin Finish
Named for its velvety look, satin finish is glossy and smooth. As a satin finish tends to withstand cleaning better without being overly glossy, many homeowners use it on their kids’ bedroom walls or other areas of high traffic and will need to be cleaned on a regular basis.
Semi-Gloss
Semi-gloss is easily cleaned and has a subtle shine. Phoenix painters recommend semi-gloss paint finish for rooms that have the potential to be messy, such as kitchens or bathrooms. Both rooms are exposed to splashing or steaming water. Also, many homeowners choose to use semi-gloss on their cabinets, both for the easiness of cleaning and added shine.
Glossy
Glossy finishes reflect the most light and tend to have an almost reflective quality that mimics plastic. Because of the unique and vibrant sheen of gloss finishes, they are best used as accents on trim or doorways. In some homes, a room painted in complete gloss can appear cold or uninviting, but in used as accepts it adds interest to a room. Phoenix painters also warn that because this type of paint reflects high amounts of light, it will highlight imperfections, making prep time incredibly important.
